Dennis R. Smith is the Founder and President of Computer Business Solutions, Inc. a privately held software consulting and training company. Dennis, a native of Dallas, graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BBA in Finance and minor in Economics. After being recruited by Exxon, he furthered his education and earned his MBA from Pepperdine University while maintaining a perfect GPA.
Dennis’ desire to make a difference at the companies he served was evident early in his career. While working for Exxon in IT and as a Senior Financial Analyst, he personally designed and with his team developed Exxon’s mainframe database for tracking and analyzing all development and expenses for Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. He then automated many functions within the accounting department with a new concept at the time, spreadsheets, saving hundreds of hundreds of man hours per month. While making monthly financial presentations to Exxon’s divisional engineering leadership, Dennis eventually recognized that, irrespective of his hard work and regular promotions, his financial and IT skills would never be as impactful to Exxon as the critical work of engineers and geologists. He began pursuit (and self-funding) of his MBA to prepare for a different career path.
After earning his MBA Dennis was recruited away from Exxon by a well-respected Senior Partner at Peat Marwick (KPMG) as one of 5 consultants to establish KPMG’s new Mergers and Acquisition group. When corporate decided to change the M & A services from revenue generating to a non-rev service for audit and tax clients, the Senior Partner departed to become Partner in Charge of KPMG operations in another city while promoting the merits of his skilled team. Dennis was recruited by Columbia / Tri-Star Pictures to run their Forecasting and Joint Venture Accounting departments, and led the improvement of multiple processes. While these improvements were recognized within the department, “off-the-lot” contributions were minimally impactful when compared to the theatrical, creative, and business decisions made by entertainment executives at the studios.
Although Dennis respected and enjoyed working for these companies, he was still driven to apply what he had learned at school and in practice to achieve meaningful improvement at companies he served, and so he founded Integrated Business Services (IBS) in 1988. The company’s mission: “To help improve clients’ growth and profitability with effective implementation, training, and support of industry leading business management software” was so successful it provided Dennis the wherewithal to transition from California and start a similar company from the ground up back in his home town of Dallas..
Based on his success at IBS, Dennis founded Computer Business Solutions, Inc. (CBSi) in 1991 in Plano, Texas, and implemented Sage Accpac and Great Plains accounting software. Finding limitations with these packages, the company went on to become the first Navision Solution Center in North Texas in 1996. After finding no limits with Navision’s programming source code, Dennis focused CBSi on what is now Microsoft Dynamics NAV. His team has a unique expertise improving processes and implementing Dynamics NAV out-of-the-box, as well as designing custom Dynamics NAV solutions to adeptly solve many unique, but real world business issues for CBSi’s clients. He takes pride in being able to honestly say that CBSi has yet to encounter a client request that the company’s experienced consulting and development team could not solve. As a result of this dedication and determination, CBSi has become a leading Microsoft Dynamics NAV Solution Center in the region.
Dennis always knew he wanted to make a significant impact on business, but his vision also includes the belief that this should be accomplished in an environment where everyone (clients, employees and vendors alike) is treated according to the Golden Rule, and where employees are given opportunities to succeed and be compensated based on their positive impact to the company and the clients they serve. Following this philosophy, his clients’ many successes over the past 23 years are proof that this equation does work with the right guidance and leadership.
Dennis is an Eagle Scout and an active supporter in his community and faith, making the special balance of business, family, friends, clients, and co-workers his priority. Recurring recipients of his support, in addition to his church, include Bryan’s House, Love for Kids and Hope’s Door, supporting disadvantaged children and protecting at-risk mothers.
Along with strategizing to improve the business and lives of people, Dennis enjoys tennis, boating, skiing, and music – especially playing the trumpet accompanying his wife on the piano. He resides in Plano, Texas with his wife and three children.
